The story of the creatures known as the Fresno Nightcrawlers began in California’s Central Valley.

In the late 1990s, a Fresno resident was viewing footage from a surveillance camera installed in his yard. He noticed something strange in the video.

The camera captured two tall, very thin figures slowly moving across the lawn. Even stranger was the way the figures moved—it seemed as if they weren’t walking, but rather gliding along the ground.

The man transmitted the footage to a local television station, after which the video quickly spread online.

In 2011, surveillance cameras were installed in Yosemite National Park to monitor potential trespassers. But instead of people, the cameras captured something unexpected.

The footage showed two light-colored figures with long legs moving through the forest at night. Their silhouettes almost perfectly matched the description of the creatures in the original video: elongated legs, small upper bodies, and a characteristic smooth gait.

Following this, interest in Nightcrawlers skyrocketed.

In 2014, a family from Youngstown reported spotting a similar creature near their home.

Even more astonishing were the stories from South America. In Chile and Argentina, eyewitnesses described creatures that almost perfectly matched the description of Nightcrawlers.

Over time, Nightcrawlers became part of internet culture. They were depicted as toys, memes, stickers, and even printed on clothing.

There are many theories about who or what these creatures might be.

Some speculate that they are aliens observing Earth.

Others believe that Nightcrawlers may be spirits or guardians of nature, linked to ancient Native American legends.

There’s also a more fantastical theory—that these creatures come from another dimension, accidentally entering our world.

Skeptics, of course, offer more mundane explanations. They believe the video could have been created using puppets or computer graphics.

Despite much speculation, no direct evidence of the Nightcrawlers’ existence has emerged.

However, the original recording was made before modern video editing software was widely available. This makes the theory of a fake less obvious.

The lack of a definitive explanation only heightens the interest.

Regardless of whether Nightcrawlers actually exist, they have already become part of modern pop culture.

Artists and designers use their image, and fans get tattoos of them.

Interestingly, many perceive them not as terrifying monsters, but rather as mysterious and even somewhat friendly creatures.
