Fourteen months after leaving for military deployment, David was finally coming home. Long months apart, interrupted phone calls, and constant worry had tested both him and his wife, Sarah. When his mission ended earlier than expected, he decided not to tell her. He wanted to surprise the woman he loved.

On a rainy afternoon, he arrived at their suburban home. Sarah’s car was parked outside, and a single light glowed upstairs. Leaving his duffel bag on the porch, David quietly stepped inside. The front door was unlocked.

He slipped off his boots and carefully climbed the stairs, smiling as he imagined Sarah’s reaction. But halfway down the hallway, he froze.

Voices were coming from their bedroom.

Sarah was talking to a man.

His heart began pounding as he slowly looked through the slightly open door.

A man sat beside the bed with his back turned. Sarah stood a few feet away, gripping a pair of rehabilitation parallel bars. For one terrifying moment, David feared the worst.

Then he noticed the stranger’s medical uniform.

A carbon-fiber prosthetic leg rested on the bed beside him.

Tears streamed down Sarah’s face as she struggled to stay on her feet.

“You’re making incredible progress,” the physical therapist said. “If you keep this up, you’ll be walking without assistance before your husband comes home next month.”

Sarah smiled through the pain.

“I want to be standing when I see him,” she whispered. “I don’t want David’s first memory of me to be in a wheelchair.”

Everything suddenly made sense.

Months earlier, Sarah had described a car accident as nothing more than a few minor injuries. She had hidden the truth to keep David focused while he served overseas.

The accident had cost her a leg.

For months, she had endured surgeries, rehabilitation, and exhausting therapy in secret, determined to surprise him with her recovery instead of burdening him with her pain.

Unable to stay hidden any longer, David stepped into the room.

Sarah looked up in disbelief.

“David…?”

She lost her balance, but before she could fall, David rushed forward and caught her in his arms.

Neither of them needed words.

The secrets, the prosthetic, and the months of suffering no longer mattered.

After fourteen long months apart, they were finally together again.
