Ethan had been hiking forest trails for years and had learned to trust his senses. Usually, nature sounded predictable: the rustle of the wind, the singing of birds, the crunch of branches underfoot. But that day, a human voice unexpectedly pierced the silence.

“Help…”

The words came from somewhere deep within the cliff. They sounded muffled, as if passing through a thick layer of stone. There were no campsites, houses, or any signs of people nearby. However, a few seconds later, the voice repeated itself.

Following the sound, Ethan noticed a narrow opening, almost completely hidden by bushes.

As soon as he was inside, the familiar sounds of the forest disappeared.

Further on, Ethan came across things that didn’t fit with the surroundings.

A backpack sat against the wall. A sealed bottle of water lay nearby. Nearby was a neatly coiled rope with a loop already in place.

A voice rang out, very close.

“I’m stuck… please…”

As Ethan rounded another ledge, he saw a human hand pressed against the rock wall. But something was wrong. It wasn’t reaching out to him for help.

Quite the contrary.

The fingers seemed to be holding the body against something invisible around the bend.

Suddenly, the hand slid sharply to the side. A quiet electronic buzzing sound was heard.

The flashlight beam picked out a small device with a blinking red indicator, attached to the rock.

A motion sensor.

The truth became obvious.

As soon as the indicator went out, the voice changed.

The pleading and anxiety disappeared.

A calm male tone said,

“You shouldn’t have come alone.”

The hand instantly disappeared into the darkness. A dull thud sounded somewhere ahead. Ethan spun around.

Now he noticed other devices attached along the passage. Ropes. Footprints.

And they all led in only one direction—into the cave.

Then a terrible realization dawned on him: this place hadn’t been a trap by accident. It had been created specifically for one.

From deep within the tunnel, he heard real footsteps.

Ethan turned off his flashlight and crouched down by the wall. In the complete darkness, his hand unexpectedly touched a person.

Someone was sitting nearby, pressed against the rock.

The stranger was trembling.

He grabbed Ethan’s wrist tightly and whispered barely audibly,

“They don’t leave witnesses.”

When one of the beams of light flickered for a moment, Ethan bolted.

Screams rang out behind him.

The footsteps of his pursuers thundered down the tunnel.

He ran without looking back until he saw sunlight at the exit. Even after finding himself in the forest, he continued to rush forward until his strength finally gave out.

Rescuers and investigators later arrived at the scene.

But the cave was almost empty.

No sensors, no equipment, no ropes remained.

After some time, experts came to a disturbing conclusion: in remote areas, there had indeed been cases of recorded cries for help being used to lure people into hard-to-reach places.
